What is the LETHE project? There are five key ideas that frame the project and that we consider essential to understand the overall approach of the project.

LETHE is about uncovering hidden stories. These are untold for a variety of reasons. Hidden stories can be overshadowed by other stories, they can be silenced because they are controversial or sensitive, or because they are about marginalised groups who are sometimes intentionally, forgotten.

The LETHE perspective is that history is “in motion”. There are no single or fixed historical narratives. Social and cultural settings influence how we understand the past.

LETHE asks historical questions that are key to exploring and learning about the past. These questions guide investigations, shape the analysis of evidence and build meaningful interpretations. They also help spark curiosity and develop critical thinking.

In LETHE objects are used to open up and explore hidden stories. Objects from the past can be used to understand social, cultural or technological developments. In historical investigations, such objects are examined for their material composition, shape, function, context and purpose to answer questions about past events and human experiences.

LETHE uses objects and sources from the past (like artefacts, oral histories, written records, visual and audio-visual sources) as evidence to answer questions and make claims about historical events and experiences. These sources gain meaning when they are examined and interpreted in context.
